The furniture district that built the city, now lofts, offices and the brewery that moved back in a decade after Founders moved out.

Grand Rapids was Furniture City before it was Beer City, and Monroe North is where you can still see the first job. Walk north on Monroe Avenue from the Michigan Street edge of downtown and the buildings change scale: long brick factory blocks with segmented arch windows, loading bays, and the clock tower of the Berkey & Gay works standing over the road at number 940. That plant went up in 1874 and its owners claimed at the time that it was the largest furniture factory in the world. It is condominiums now. Most of the district is.
The reinvention took a long time and is still going. Loft conversions started here in the late 1990s, when the neighbourhood was still mostly garages, small factories and bars, and the last few years have pulled in more than $260 million of development. The former Wolverine Brass Works at 648 Monroe, close to a hundred and twenty years old, carries offices and retail. The river runs along the west side of the whole district, with the White Pine Trail corridor and the riverwalk threading along it.
Now the honest part about the beer, because the district gets billed as a brewery quarter and that oversells it. Founders Brewing started in this neighbourhood and left it for the Grandville Avenue site in 2007. For a decade afterwards Monroe North had no brewery at all. City Built Brewing opened at 820 Monroe Avenue NW in 2017 and was the first one back, pouring its own beer next to a coastal Mexican kitchen. It is very good and it is, essentially, the district's beer scene.
So treat Monroe North as a neighbourhood to walk for its architecture, with one destination taproom in it, rather than as a crawl. Grand Rapids genuinely earns its beer reputation, but the density is elsewhere: downtown, along Wealthy Street and out on Plainfield. This page tells you how to fit the two together without wasting an evening.
Monroe North runs north along Monroe Avenue NW from the Michigan Street edge of downtown towards Leonard Street, with the Grand River on its western side. On foot from Rosa Parks Circle it is ten to fifteen minutes on flat pavement; from Calder Plaza, under ten.
Driving, come off US-131 at Leonard Street or Ann Street for the northern end, or at Michigan Street for the southern. Unlike the downtown core this is a district where you can usually find a surface lot or a street space without circling, which makes it a sensible place to leave the car and walk south into town.
The free DASH shuttle serves the downtown core rather than the length of Monroe North, so check the current route map before relying on it for the northern end. Rideshare coverage is good and the fares to the other drinking clusters — downtown, Wealthy Street, Plainfield Avenue — are short-hop cheap.
The reason Grand Rapids exists at its present size is hardwood and the river. Lumber came down the Grand, factories lined the banks, and by the late nineteenth century the city was exporting furniture under its own name to the point that "Grand Rapids" became a shorthand for a grade of American furniture.
Monroe North is what is left of the manufacturing edge of that. Look for three things as you walk.
Scale. These blocks were built to house steam-driven machinery and hundreds of workers on a floor. The windows are enormous because the buildings predate reliable electric light.
Water access. The whole district sits against the river because the river was both power and transport. The modern riverwalk follows the same line.
The clock tower on the Berkey & Gay building, which is the single best photograph in the district and is best taken from the opposite side of Monroe in the late afternoon.
The conversions have been sympathetic on the whole — brick left exposed, window openings retained — and the effect is a neighbourhood that reads as continuous with its history rather than a set of replicas. Furniture is still a real regional industry, incidentally. The office furniture companies that came out of this cluster remain among the largest employers in the metropolitan area.
Grand Rapids has won national readers' polls for best beer city in the United States repeatedly in recent years, and the claim is fair: the metropolitan area carries something like thirty-five breweries and taprooms. What it does not have is a single brewery street, and Monroe North is not one either.
City Built Brewing, 820 Monroe Avenue NW, is the district's brewery and the reason to come. It opened in 2017 in the ground floor of a mixed-use conversion, the first brewery in Monroe North since Founders left the neighbourhood in 2007, and it shares its room with a coastal Mexican kitchen doing seafood and birria. The beer leans towards fruited and historically-inflected styles rather than the West Coast IPA arms race. Hours skew afternoon-to-late and shift seasonally, so check before you walk up.
Founders, at 235 Grandville Avenue SW on the other side of downtown, is the city's largest craft brewery and still has its taproom. It is about a twenty-five minute walk or a short ride from Monroe North.
Two corrections worth carrying. Bell's is Kalamazoo, an hour south, not Grand Rapids; people conflate them constantly. And the scene churns — the long-running Grand Rapids Brewing Co downtown has closed, and taprooms open and shut here as they do everywhere. Check what is actually trading this month rather than working from a list in an old article.
The geography defeats a single walking crawl, so pick one cluster per evening rather than trying to connect them.
Practical points. Downtown Grand Rapids runs a signed refreshment area in which a marked cup can be carried between participating venues; the boundaries are posted and do not extend everywhere, so read the signage rather than assuming. Rideshare between clusters is cheap and the distances are short. And if you want someone else to drive, guided brewery tours do operate here, though the inventory is thin compared with a larger city, so book ahead rather than expecting to walk up.
Monroe North is a half-hour walk end to end and it is not a shopping street. Between the converted factories there are offices, apartments, a scattering of restaurants and long stretches of nothing much. That is the character, not a failure.
Daytime is better for the buildings. Late afternoon light hits the east side of Monroe and the brickwork turns properly red. Evening is better for the taproom and quieter than downtown, which is part of the appeal.
Parking is the district's practical advantage over the core: there is surface parking and on-street space, and you are not negotiating an arena crowd. Coming from downtown, the walk up Monroe from Michigan Street takes ten to fifteen minutes on flat pavement.
Two seasonal notes. In winter the riverfront stretch is exposed and the wind comes straight down the valley, so this is not a January stroll. And through 2026 and 2027 the rapids restoration work on the Grand affects riverbank access south of here, so if you are planning to walk the river between the district and the museums, check what is open first.

Monroe North gets described as a brewery district, which oversells it: it is a converted furniture-factory neighbourhood with one very good taproom in it. The real density of bars sits downtown, on Wealthy Street and along Plainfield Avenue.
Not any more. Founders began in the Monroe North area and moved to 235 Grandville Avenue SW, on the other side of downtown, in 2007. The Grand Rapids taproom there is still open and it remains the city's largest craft brewery, though its satellite taproom in Detroit has closed. From Monroe North it is about twenty-five minutes on foot or a few minutes by car.
Furniture and metalworking. The Berkey & Gay Furniture Company factory at 940 Monroe Avenue NW went up in 1874 and was described at the time as the largest furniture factory in the world; it is now the Boardwalk condominiums, clock tower and all. The Wolverine Brass Works building at 648 Monroe still stands after close to a hundred and twenty years. Loft conversions began in the late 1990s and the district has drawn over $260 million of investment recently.
Within defined boundaries, yes. Downtown Grand Rapids operates a signed refreshment area where a marked, branded cup can be carried between participating venues during posted hours. The boundary does not cover the whole city and does not automatically include every street in Monroe North, so read the signage and buy from a participating bar. Outside the marked zone, open containers are not permitted.
