A converted trucking depot laid out like a German beer hall, and the address that turned Grand Rapids into Beer City.
Two homebrewing friends organised a company in 1996 and renamed it Canal Street Brewing the following year, after the old name of the Grand Rapids street where nineteenth-century breweries had stood and where they set up. Their pale ale label carried a historical engraving of brewers with the word "Founders" above it, customers assumed that was the company, and the founders gave in. By 2000 they had gone three years without paying federal excise tax, were behind on rent and a bank note, and were sitting with bankruptcy attorneys. The pivot that saved them was deciding to brew bigger, stranger, more assertive beer instead of trying to please everybody.
That worked so completely that by 2018 Founders was the fifteenth largest brewery in the United States by volume. KBS, the bourbon-barrel-aged Kentucky Breakfast Stout, went from an annual queue-round-the-block release to year-round production in 2020. Centennial IPA, Dirty Bastard and the Porter carry the everyday trade.
The taproom is on Cesar E. Chavez Avenue at the south end of downtown, in a former trucking depot laid out deliberately like a German beer hall: long tables, high ceiling, a big patio and beer garden out the back that fills the moment West Michigan hits sixty degrees. Food is sandwich-and-pretzel territory rather than a restaurant menu, and it is designed to be eaten alongside a heavy stout.
Be honest about the ownership. Mahou San Miguel of Spain took a minority stake in 2014 and a controlling one in 2019, at which point the Brewers Association stopped calling Founders craft. The beer did not change. Whether that matters is a decision for the drinker.
Open daily from late morning; expect a full room on a Friday and on any Van Andel Arena show night.
The taproom is on Cesar E. Chavez Avenue, the street formerly called Grandville Avenue, at the south end of downtown. It is a five-minute walk from the Downtown Market and about ten minutes from Van Andel Arena.
There is a car park on site but it is not large, and it goes first on Friday and Saturday evenings and on any arena show night. Street parking in the surrounding blocks is metered and enforced. This is a place to arrive by rideshare or on foot if you intend to drink a barrel-aged stout.
Driving in, take the Wealthy Street exit from US-131 and turn north. The Rapid's Division Avenue services and the Silver Line stop within a few blocks, and the DASH shuttle covers the downtown loop from the free peripheral lots.
A former trucking depot, opened out and fitted with long communal tables under a high roof, with the brewhouse behind glass and the tank farm visible from the car park. The model is a German beer hall rather than an American brewpub, which means you sit next to strangers and it is loud by design.
The draught list runs well beyond what is distributed: barrel-aged one-offs, small-batch experiments and taproom-only pours alongside the year-round beers. There is usually a flight option, and the bar staff will steer you if you say what you like rather than asking what is good.
Food is deliberately simple. Sandwiches, soft pretzels, a few shareable things, all built to sit under a 12% stout rather than compete with it. Nobody comes here for the kitchen and nobody pretends otherwise.
The beer garden and patio are the best seats from May to September. Inside is better from November to March, when the room's warmth and noise are the whole point.
Hours have run late morning to late evening every day, later on Friday and Saturday and earlier on Sunday. It is a twenty-one-plus room after certain hours; check the current policy if you are bringing older children in the afternoon.
Grand Rapids topped an online Beer City USA poll in 2012, tying with Asheville, and won it outright in 2013 before the poll was retired. The title stuck, and the city has spent the decade since earning it retrospectively rather than resting on it. There are now more than seventy breweries in the wider region, and the Beer City Ale Trail lists over thirty-five in the city and surrounding communities.
Founders is the flagship but not the whole story. The Monroe North district north of downtown packs several taprooms into walking distance of each other, and the neighbourhoods east and south of the centre carry more.
The mistake: Bell's is not a Grand Rapids brewery. Bell's Brewery is in Kalamazoo, about fifty miles south down US-131, and its Eccentric Cafe is there rather than here. People conflate the two constantly, book a Grand Rapids trip expecting Two Hearted at the source, and are mildly disappointed. Kalamazoo is a straightforward day trip if that is what you came for.
Second caution: taprooms close. Founders shut its Detroit location in May 2023, and several well-known Michigan breweries have closed outposts in recent years. Check that a specific taproom is trading before you build an evening around it.
Mahou San Miguel, the Spanish brewing group, bought a 30% stake in Founders in December 2014 and increased that to a controlling holding in August 2019, with the two founders retaining a small share each. The Brewers Association, which defines American craft brewing by ownership as well as scale, revoked Founders' craft designation as a result.
Whether that changes anything for a drinker is a genuine argument rather than a settled question. The brewing operation is still here, the recipes did not change, and the beer is made by the same people in the same building. But if buying independent matters to you, Founders no longer qualifies by the industry's own definition, and there are a dozen genuinely independent taprooms within a fifteen-minute drive.
Founders also settled a racial discrimination lawsuit brought by a former employee out of court, a case that drew national coverage in 2019 and led to a period of significant change at the company. It is part of the record and worth knowing if you are the kind of drinker who asks.
None of this is a reason not to go. It is a reason to go informed, which is the same standard we would apply to anything else on this site.

It is the single most common mix-up visitors make when planning a Michigan beer trip. Grand Rapids has Founders, plus more than seventy breweries across the wider region. Kalamazoo is an easy day trip if Two Hearted at the source is what you came for.
Public walk-in brewery tours are not a standard offering. Special events and release days are sometimes ticketed separately and sell out in advance. Check the current schedule if a tour specifically is what you want.

The beer is still brewed in Grand Rapids by the same team. Whether the ownership matters is a drinker's call, and there are many genuinely independent taprooms nearby.
KBS if it is pouring — the bourbon-barrel-aged Kentucky Breakfast Stout that made the brewery's name and went year-round in 2020. It is heavy, so one is enough. Breakfast Stout is the lighter unbarrelled version. Centennial IPA is the everyday flagship and Dirty Bastard the winter Scotch ale. Ask what is taproom-only: the small-batch pours that never reach a can are the reason to drink at the source.
