John Ball Zoo Runs a Season, and Visitors Keep Missing It

John Ball Zoo does not open year-round. Its 2026 season opened on 20 March and runs into late November, with off-season days and hours varying. That single fact wrecks more Grand Rapids family itineraries than anything else, because a great many articles about the city list the zoo without mentioning that half the calendar is unavailable.

The zoo sits on a wooded hillside on the west side of the city, up Fulton Street from downtown. The terrain is part of the appeal and part of the work: a funicular carries visitors up the grade towards the treehouse at the top, weather permitting, and the sensible way to do the visit is to ride up and walk down rather than the other way round.

Budget a morning. This is not an enormous zoo and it pairs better with an indoor afternoon than with an attempt to stretch it to a full day.

For a winter family trip, the substitutes are all central. The Grand Rapids Public Museum on the west bank holds the 1928 Spillman carousel in a glass pavilion built out over the river — the pavilion reopened after renovation in February 2026 — and a planetarium named for Roger B. Chaffee, the Grand Rapids-born astronaut who died in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967. The Children's Museum downtown suits under-eights. Meijer Gardens keeps its conservatory open all winter. And Rosa Parks Circle becomes a free public ice rink.

Blandford Nature Center on the north-west edge of the city is the closest thing to an outdoor animal experience in the cold months, with woodland trails and a wildlife education centre housing native animals that cannot be returned to the wild. Arrangements and charges there change, so check before setting off.

Season dates are set annually and are published by the zoo. Confirm the current year's opening and closing dates on the zoo's own site before building a trip around them, particularly at the shoulders in March and November when hours are shortest.
