December at Meijer Gardens Is the Busiest Ticket in West Michigan

Frederik Meijer Gardens has staged a Christmas display every year since the site opened in 1995, and it has grown into the single busiest visitor event in West Michigan. Christmas and Holiday Traditions fills the conservatory and surrounding galleries with more than forty displays and decorated trees representing holiday customs from around the world, set among the winter plantings.

It runs from late November into early January. The exact window is set annually.

On selected December evenings the DeVos Van Andel Piazza outside carries a seasonal light experience built around The American Horse, the twenty-four-foot Nina Akamu bronze made from Leonardo da Vinci's unfinished commission. Seeing that lit, in the cold, is the part people remember.

Three pieces of practical advice, all of them about crowds.

Book ahead. Timed entry and advance tickets are the norm for the December run and turning up hopefully on a Saturday afternoon in mid-December is a poor plan.

Go on a weekday evening if your schedule allows. The difference between a Tuesday at six and a Saturday at two is the difference between a pleasant hour and a slow shuffle.

Park with patience. The car park fills, and December is the one month of the year when the twenty-minute drive from downtown is not the slow part of the journey.

What this is not is a substitute for the rest of the site. The sculpture park is open and largely unpleasant to walk in a December wind, and the outdoor gardens are dormant. Treat it as an indoor evening.

Admission is charged and the December programme sometimes carries its own arrangements separate from general admission. Check current pricing and ticketing with Meijer Gardens rather than assuming it matches the rest of the year.

For anyone building a winter trip around it: the display overlaps with the start of the city's free World of Winter festival downtown in January, so a late-December or early-January visit can reasonably take in both.
