The City's Answer to January Is a Hundred Artworks and a Free Ice Rink

Grand Rapids has the cloudiest Januarys of its year and somewhere around seventy to eighty inches of snow in an average season. The city's response is World of Winter, a free festival that runs downtown from early January to the start of March. In 2026 it ran from 9 January to 1 March.

The programme carries more than a hundred art installations, light works, performances and events. All of it is free to attend. The stated purpose is to get people outdoors during the worst weeks of the year, and on a Friday night in February it demonstrably works.

The centre of it is Rosa Parks Circle, which is flooded for the season into a public ice rink. Skating is free; skate hire costs a few dollars. What almost nobody realises is that the circle is a Maya Lin artwork. Ecliptic, completed in 2001, was designed around water in three states — flowing water, vapour and ice — so the winter rink is the third state of the piece rather than a rink dropped into a plaza.

The festival opens with ice carving at the circle and runs a calendar of one-off events through the two months, including fire performances, skating showcases, street games and food trucks. Individual event dates are published on the festival's own calendar and change annually.

Practical notes for visitors. Downtown hotel rates are at their lowest of the year in January and February, which makes this the cheapest weekend Grand Rapids sells. The free DASH shuttle runs roughly every eight minutes between the outer car parks and the centre, and is considerably more appealing in February than in July. Bring boots with grip: the hazard downtown is compacted ice under fresh snow, particularly on the bridge approaches where the wind keeps the deck swept.

One thing to plan around: John Ball Zoo is closed for the season through the whole of the festival, so a family trip in January needs a different shape.
